My painting of "Eli on Stage", lead singer for the band "Helen Kelter Skelter" was just named to the American Illustration 44 to appear online as part of The ARCHIVE collection at ai-ap.com. Congratulations! It has the distinction of being one of only 577 professional and 106 student images from 7,453 submitted to receive at least 4 votes from the jury and is therefore eligible to appear permanently online in The ARCHIVE, AI-AP’s exclusive online juried collection, where over time illustrators can build an online portfolio of their winning images and where creatives can search and make direct contact with them.

I wanted to say thanks to this year’s distinguished AI44 Jury included: Jenn Boggs, Art Director, Virginia Quarterly Review; Jade Cuevas, Visuals Editor, Politico; Tiffany Forrester, Senior Art Director, HarperCollins; Katty Huertas, Art Direcgtor and Illustrator, The Washington Post; Erin Mayes, Creative Director, Partner, EmDash; Mia Meredith, Designer, The New York Times for Kids; Terresa Moses, PhD, Creative Director, Blackbird Revolt; Ariel Richardson, Senior Editor, Chronicle Books; Adam Vieyra, Creative Director, Mother Jones; and Kurt Woerpel, Partner, TXTbooks.

"The Aeronaught's Odyssey"

I find my role as an educator is really a reflection of all that I have learned becoming a professional. I feel the best way to teach is to share. So here I am sharing the importance of "Loving the Process" So I created some process and Finished examples for my Anatomy and Rendering and Color with Intent classes. Here, I’ve created an illustration for a mock Book Cover Format utilizing a Limited Color, Complimentary Color Scheme of Blue and Orange. This is based on a character development of a Steam Punk Aeronaut Captain. I recorded the process painting in Oils by starting with a warm monochromatic underpainting. I kept the darks thin and transparent while building the lighter values with impasto textures more opaque. I hope it helps make the finished piece even more appreciated by seeing behind the curtain and sharing that the real magic is passion for process.

Incredible News from Wimmer Studios!
We are deeply honored to announce that the Society of Illustrators in Los Angeles (SILA) has recognized our work in Illustration West 63!
Mike’s oil painting “Stranded” has been accepted into this prestigious competition.
This was created to celebrate those retro stories we all grew up with of discovering life on a new planet only to be discover it was not what we hope, but what we feared.
